Four Roman Coins Graded by NGC Ancients May Sell for Six Figures in January Sale

Posted on 23/12/2021

The Stack's Bowers auction features gold rarities from the Roman Empire.

Four Gold Aureus coins from the Roman Empire that are certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) are in the spotlight at the Stack's Bowers NYINC Auction – Session D sale. They are among over 150 rarities certified by NGC Ancients in the auction; online bidding is underway, concluding on January 16, 2022.

One of the top lots in the sale is a coin featuring Quintillus, whose brief reign in AD 270 is shrouded in mystery. His coins are extremely hard to come by, so spirited bidding is likely for the one in this sale: a Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients Ch XF, 5/5 Strike and 3/5 Surface with Fine Style (lot 3150). From the Dr. Michael Rogers Collection, it has an estimate of $75,000 to $150,000.

Struck a few years earlier, another rarity being offered is a Roman Empire Valerian II, AD 256-258 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients AU, 5/5 Strike and 2/5 Surface (lot 3148). The young ruler shared power with his father and grandfather but died under suspicious circumstances. Like the other three coins with estimates of $75,000 to $150,000 in the sale, this one is also from the Dr. Michael Rogers Collection.
