Magnificent Coins Struck Outside of Europe Top List of NGC-certified Rarities in Heritage Sale

Two rare coins struck outside of Europe for colonial powers are each expected to sell for over $100,000 in a January auction. They are among nearly 200 world coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) in Heritage Auctions' NYINC World Coins Platinum Night sale, scheduled for January 10, 2022.

They are led by a Venezuela 1786MO FM 8 Reales Struck in Mexico City graded NGC AU 58★ (lot 30396). With an estimate of $150,000 to $200,000, this coin's exceptional eye appeal earned it NGC's Star designation. Additionally, it is believed to be unique due to its weight of only 16.18 grams.

Underweight coins were struck for Venezuela under a Spanish royal ordinance in late 1786, but the king ordered them melted down eight months later amid worries that they would undermine commerce elsewhere. Only denominations of 1/2, 1 and 2 Reales were permitted under the initial order, so the discovery of this underweight 8 Reales is particularly exciting.

Another great rarity in the sale is an India 1835.(C) 2 Mohurs Restrike graded NGC PF 65 Ultra Cameo (lot 30305). Struck in Calcutta during British rule in India, this coin has an estimate of $100,000 to $150,000.
