Three NGC-certified Coins Each Realize Six Figures in NAC Auctions

A gold stater from the Kingdom of Bactria stood out among a variety of coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) in recent sales by Numismatica Ars Classica NAC. Two other NGC-certified coins also realized more than $100,000 in the sales that were held November 17, 2021.
The top NGC-certified lot was a Kingdom of Bactria Eucratides I (circa 170-145 B.C.) Gold Stater graded NGC Ancients MS, 5/5 Strike and 4/5 Surface with Fine Style (Auction 126, lot 266) that realized 205,700 CHF (about $196,200). This ancient coin features Eucratides I, who overthrew the Euthydemid dynasty and ruled the region starting in 171 B.C.

Another important ancient coin in the sale was a Ptolemaic Kingdom, Berenice II (died 221 B.C.) Pentekaidekadrachm issued under Ptolemy III, 246-222 B.C., graded NGC Ancients Ch AU, 5/5 Strike and 3/5 Surface with Fine Style (Auction 126, lot 278) that realized 169,400 CHF (about $161,500). The obverse features Berenice II, who reigned with her husband King Ptolemy III, ruler of Egypt from 246-222 B.C.
Another coin that realized 169,400 CHF (about $161,500) was a Greece 1876A 50 Drachmai graded NGC MS 65+★ (Auction 128, lot 462). This particular example possesses exceptional eye appeal, earning it NGC’s coveted Star (★) designation. The coin features King George I, the longest-reigning Greek monarch, who ruled from 1863 until his assassination in 1913.

Other NGC-certified highlights in the sale included:

- a Zeugitana, Carthage circa 270-260 B.C. Gold Trihemistater graded NGC Ancients Ch AU, 5/5 Strike and 3/5 Surface with Fine Style (Auction 126, lot 59) that realized 78,650 CHF (about $75,000)
- a Sicily, Syracuse circa 344-335 B.C. Gold 30-Litral graded NGC Ancients Ch AU, 5/5 Strike and 3/5 Surface with Fine Style (Auction 126, lot 50) that realized 43,560 CHF (about $41,500)
- a Kingdom of Macedon Alexander III, 336-323 B.C. Gold Distater graded NGC Ancients XF, 5/5 Strike and 4/5 Surface (Auction 126, lot 81) that realized 43,560 CHF (about $41,500)
- a Thessaly, Larissa circa mid-4th century B.C. Silver Stater-Didrachm graded NGC Ancients Ch XF 5/5 Strike and 4/5 Surface with Fine Style (Auction 126, lot 122) that realized 41,140 CHF (about $39,200)
- a Greece (1940) 100 Drachmai graded NGC PF 64 Cameo (Auction 128, lot 469) that realized 39,930 CHF (about $38,000)
- a Greece 1876A 100 Drachmai graded NGC AU Details (Auction 128, lot 463) that realized 37,510 CHF (about $35,700)
- a Great Britain 1893 £5 graded NGC PF 62 Cameo (Auction 128, lot 449) that realized 36,300 CHF (about $34,600)
- a Ptolemaic Kingdom, Arsinoe II (died 270/68 B.C.) issued after circa 193/2 B.C. Gold Octodrachm graded NGC Ancients MS, 5/5 Strike and 4/5 Surface (Auction 126, lot 282) that realized 36,300 CHF (about $34,600)
