NGC VarietyPlus Services

Coin varieties are an exciting niche within numismatics, but it can sometimes be difficult for collectors to determine if a coin is truly a variety. VarietyPlus is an official attribution service through Certified Collectibles Group - International UK Limited (NGC), an affiliate of Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®), that authenticates coin varieties. NGC’s attributions, which are included on the NGC certification label, are trusted by collectors and dealers.

Through VarietyPlus, NGC experts thoroughly examine coins and assign the appropriate variety attribution, which adds market value and appeal to NGC-certified coins. NGC recognizes over 19,000 of eligible varieties of coins from around the world, including more than 2,800 from Great Britain. These are listed in an online catalog at NGCcoin.uk/variety-plus.

In addition to the varieties listed in the VarietyPlus catalog, NGC will attribute British coins according to the Bull, ESC, Freeman, Marsh, Peck or Spink catalogs by request. The submitter should select the VarietyPlus service on the NGC Submission Form and note the requested catalog and catalog number in the Variety field. These numbers are:

• Bull numbers: English Silver Coinage Since 1649, by Maurice Bull (revised numbering system)
• ESC numbers: English Silver Coinage Since 1649, by Maurice Bull (original numbering system)
• Freeman numbers: The Bronze Coinage of Great Britain, by Michael J. Freeman
• Marsh numbers: The Gold Sovereign and The Gold Half Sovereign, by Michael A. Marsh
• Peck numbers: English Copper Tin and Bronze Coins in the British Museum 1558-1958 by C. Wilson Peck
• Spink numbers: Coins of England and The United Kingdom and Coins of Scotland, Ireland and the Islands (Jersey, Guernsey, Man and Lundy) pre-Decimal Issues, published by the renowned London-based auction house Spin
