NGC-graded European Rarities Highlight November Monaco Auction

The Éditions Victor Gadoury auction features two NGC-certified coins expected to sell for six figures.

The auction house Éditions Victor Gadoury, which has been dealing in numismatic rarities since its inception in 1973, will present its Gadoury Monaco – Part 1 Auction, which features ancient, vintage and modern coins from around the world. The auction will be held November 16 and 17 at the Le Méridien Beach Plaza Hotel in Monaco.

The centerpiece of the auction is an extensive collection of numismatic rarities of the Casa Savoia, which originated from the possessions of a member of the royal family. Additionally, there is a very large selection of gold coins ranging from ancient Aureus of Rome to more modern coins, primarily from France, Italy and Monaco.

One of the highlights of the auction is this 1610 Italy - Savoy 10 Scudi d’ Oro, which NGC authenticated and graded NGC MS 60. The coin, which is one of only three examples known, was struck in Turin using the same dies used to strike the silver Ducatone of the same year. The obverse features the high-collared bust of Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy, while the reverse bears a shield of 4-fold arms, with the arms of Savoy at center. This rarity has an opening bid of 200,000 Euros (about $227,000 USD).

Another major rarity from the collection is the 1910 PROVA Italy - Savoy 100 Lire. Due to a problem with the gold content of the 1910 100 Lire issue, only 2,013 examples were struck, and many of those were melted. This particular coin is actually a PROVA, or pattern issue, which makes it that much rarer and more desirable. The coin is in a remarkable state of preservation, as evidenced by the fact that it was graded NGC PF 66. It is currently the only coin of its type graded by NGC. The opening bid for this spectacular piece is 150,000 Euros.
