Heritage Offers Four 1-Kilogram Gold Coins Graded by NGC

Posted on 16/05/2023

The large Lunar coins are among the greatest rarities in modern Chinese numismatics.

Four modern Chinese 1-kilogram gold coins, each certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®), are being offered in an upcoming sale. Bidding is scheduled to begin in late May for these and over 600 other NGC-certified rarities in Heritage Auctions' World Coins Platinum Session and Signature Auction, being held June 21-22, 2023.

Each of the four 1-kilogram coins is from the Lunar Series of Chinese coins, and the earliest of the group is a 2004 Gold 10,000 Yuan Monkey graded NGC PF 68 Ultra Cameo. The mintage limit for this coin was 15 and this is one of only two in the NGC Census. This example is numbered on its edge as "No. 003".

A 2005 Gold 10,000 Yuan Rooster graded NGC PF 67 Ultra Cameo is also featured in the auction. Like the other coins, it has an elegant scalloped edge. It is one of only three examples in the NGC Census and came from a mintage of 15. Like the other examples, it is encapsulated in an NGC Oversize Holder because of its large size.

Rounding out a run of these coins from three years in a row is a 2006 Gold 10,000 Yuan Dog graded NGC PF 68 Ultra Cameo. This coin is the highest graded of four examples in the NGC Census. It also comes from a mintage of 15, meaning the opportunity for collectors to acquire an example is extremely rare.

Finally, the auction is also offering a 2012 Gold 10,000 Yuan Dragon graded NGC PF 69 Ultra Cameo, the highest grade for any NGC-certified Gold 10,000 Yuan Lunar coin struck before 2013. The Lunar Series is one of the most popular categories of Chinese coins. Its highly anticipated designs feature one of the 12 animals in the Chinese lunar calendar and are issued annually in a variety of metals and denominations. NGC has certified more than 500,000 Chinese Lunar coins.
