Roman Gold Coin Graded by NGC Ancients Expected to Realize Five Figures at Maison Palombo Auction

A Maison Palombo sale includes a Roman gold coin showing rulers Marc Antony and Octavian, who vied for power after Caesar was killed.

Maison Palombo Numismatic Auctions is offering a Roman gold coin certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®), with an estimate of at least $80,000. The rarity is one of dozens certified by NGC being offered at the Maison Palombo Auction #21, which will be held January 28, 2023. Bidding is already underway.

A top coin in the auction is a Roman Imperatorial Marc Antony & Octavian, 41 BC Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients AU★, 5/5 Strike and 5/5 Surface (lot 73). The obverse of this nearly 2,000-year-old gold coin features the portrait of Roman general and politician Marc Antony, who vied for power after Julius Caesar’s assassination. The reverse features Octavian, whom Antony shared power with for a decade before he declared war against Antony’s wife, Cleopatra VII. This coin has an estimate of CHF 75,000 (about $81,000).

  • a Zeugitana, Carthage c. 350-320 BC Gold Stater graded NGC Ch AU, 5/5 Strike and 4/5 Surface (lot 19) with an estimate of CHF 18,000 (about $19,500)
  • a Romania 1940 20 Lei graded NGC MS 61 (lot 510) with an estimate of CHF 10,000 (about $10,800)
  • a Romania 1940 20 Lei graded NGC MS 62 (lot 511) with an estimate of CHF 10,000 (about $10,800)
