NGC-certified Quarter Eagle Offered by GreatCollections in January Sale
Posted on 10/01/2023
A rare Gold Quarter Eagle that is certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) is being offered in a GreatCollections sale. Bidding is underway for the 1851-O Gold Quarter Eagle graded NGC MS 65 and is set to end on January 15, 2023.
The Liberty Head Quarter Eagle was introduced in 1840, adopting a large left-facing version of Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty on the front. This series remained unchanged for 68 years, making it very difficult for coin collectors to complete.
The coin was produced at five mints — Philadelphia (no mintmark), Charlotte (C), Dahlonega (D), New Orleans (O) and San Francisco (S). It was struck in New Orleans only a handful of years, all before the Civil War, and Mint State examples are quite rare today. This Gold Quarter Eagle stands alone as the highest-graded 1851-O example in the NGC Census – a testament to its rarity.
