Five NGC-certified Coins Each Realize Over $100,000 in Künker Auction

Many NGC-graded vintage gold coins from continental Europe far exceeded their pre-auction estimates in the September 2022 sale.

Many rare European coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) far exceeded their pre-auction estimates in a recent sale presented by Künker. Bidding for Auction #373 ended on September 26, 2022.

The top NGC-certified coin in the sale was a Poland 1614 Danzig 10 Ducats (lot 439). The coin features an impressive depiction of Sigismund III, the king of Poland from 1587 to 1632, while the reverse features a coat of arms supported by two lions. This exquisite example realized €240,000 (about $240,000), far exceeding its pre-auction estimate of €100,000 (about $100,000).

Another highlight in the sale was a Bohemia 1629 Prague 10 Ducat graded NGC AU 58 (lot 722). The obverse depicts Ferdinand II, who became the ruler of Bohemia following the death of the previous ruler and his nephew, Emperor Matthias. Ferdinand II’s Catholic rule spanned two periods — the first from 1617 to 1619, and the second from 1620 to 1627. This example realized €168,000 (about $168,000), far exceeding its pre-auction estimate of €60,000 (about $60,000).

Other NGC-certified highlights in the auction included:

  • an Austrian Netherlands 1751 Antwerp 10 Souverain d’Or graded NGC MS 62 (lot 750), which realized €144,000 (about $144,000), exceeding its pre-auction estimate of €100,000 (about $100,000)
  • a Germany 1698 GFN Nurnberg 6 Ducat graded NGC MS 63 (lot 993), which realized €138,000 (about $138,000), far exceeding its pre-auction estimate of €60,000 (about $60,000)
  • an Austria 1743 Vienna 5 Ducat graded NGC MS 62 (lot 747), which realized €105,000 (about $105,000), far exceeding its pre-auction estimate of €20,000 (about $20,000)
  • an Austria 1867-dated Franz Joseph Coronation Gold Medal graded NGC PF 62 Ultra Cameo (lot 805), which realized €66,000 (about $66,000), far exceeding its pre-auction estimate of €20,000 (about $20,000)
  • an Austria 1745 AS/IE Vienna 5 Ducat graded NGC AU 58 (lot 765), which realized €60,000 (about $60,000), far exceeding its pre-auction estimate of €20,000 (about $20,000)
  • a Germany 1753 Passau 5 Ducat graded NGC AU 58 (lot 1000), which realized €55,200 (about $55,200), exceeding its pre-auction estimate of €35,000 (about $35,000)
  • an Austria 1628 Salzburg 4 Ducat graded NGC MS 63 (lot 839), which realized €52,800 (about $52,800), far exceeding its pre-auction estimate of €10,000 (about $10,000)
  • a Hungary ND (1690-1726) Kremnitz 10 Ducat graded NGC MS 63 (lot 852), which realized €50,400 (about $50,400), far exceeding its pre-auction estimate of €10,000 (about $10,000)
  • a Hungary 1896KB-dated Gold Restrike 9 Ducats graded NGC PF 63 Cameo (lot 813), which realized €45,600 (about $45,600), far exceeding its pre-auction estimate of €4,000 (about $4,000)
  • a China 1919 Yunnan #2 5 Dollars graded NGC MS 64 (lot 662), which realized €38,400 (about $38,400), far exceeding its pre-auction estimate of €2,500 (about $2,500)

All prices realized include a 20% buyer’s premium.
