NGC-certified Vintage Chinese Coins to Realize Six Figures in Stack’s Bowers Sale

Posted on 30/09/2022

Bidding for two gold rarities from the early 20th century was already over $100,000 as the October auction approached.

Two gold rarities are among hundreds of vintage and modern coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) showcased in the upcoming Stack’s Bowers Hong Kong Auction. Bidding for Session E, Session C and Session H is currently underway, with the sale concluding October 4-8, 2022.

One of the auction’s top lots is a China 1906 Gold Tael graded NGC MS 62 (Session E, lot 51122), with an estimate of $200,000 to $300,000. China’s lack of gold reserves kept these coins from being mass produced for use in circulation. NGC has certified 22 examples of this coin, which is regarded as one of the great treasures in Chinese numismatics.

Another coin offered with an estimate of $200,000 to $300,000 is a China (1912) Gold Dollar (Session E, lot 55159) featuring Sun Yat-sen, the first provisional presidential president of the Republic of China. The NGC Census lists only four examples of this coin, which is seldom seen at auction.

A rare silver coin is also in the spotlight: a China 1904 Hupeh Tael graded NGC MS 63 (Session E, lot 51027). Beautifully struck, the rarity from the central Chinese province features a double dragon. This high-grade example has an estimate of $200,000 to $250,000.
