MDC Monaco Auction Features Many NGC-certified Gold Rarities Valued in the Six Figures

Posted on 06/10/2022

The October 2022 auction includes two spectacular Gold Off-Metal Crowns from Charles II.

English gold rarities from King Charles II and his ill-fated father are among the world and ancient coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) that can be found in an auction by MDC Monaco. Bidding is already underway for Auction 10, which will be held October 12-13, 2022.

A top highlight in the auction is an England 1662 Gold Off-Metal Strike Crown graded NGC PF 61 (lot 1023) with a starting price of € 350,000 (about $350,000). The coin dates to a time when the English monarchy had been restored, with Charles II on the throne. It is one of only six in the NGC Census.

Incredibly, the auction features another 1662 England Gold Off-Metal Strike, with a different catalog number: W&R-49. This coin is graded NGC PF 61 (lot 1022), with a starting price of € 300,000 (about $300,000). Both Crowns have been pedigreed by NGC to the Royal Gold Set collection.

The auction also includes a great rarity from Charles II’s father, Charles I. The England 1643 Triple Unite graded NGC MS 64 (lot 1019) has a starting price of € 300,000 (about $300,000). In 1642, the English Civil War began, which ultimately resulted in King Charles I’s capture and execution. These coins are named for the reverse, which bears a message that the king stood for the Protestant faith, the laws of England and the liberty of Parliament.

Finally, an England 1701 Plain Sceptres 5 Guinea graded NGC MS 64+ (lot 1026) is available with a starting price of € 300,000 (about $300,000). Of nearly 100 examples in the NGC Census, this one stands alone as the finest-graded. Among the Royal Mint's fine works, this representation of William III is admired for its high level of realism.
