23 NGC-certified Coins Each Realized Over $100,000 in Heritage Sale

Posted on 09/09/2022

The August auction featured hundreds of US coins graded by NGC, including one from a historic shipwreck.

Twenty-three coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) each realized six figures in Heritage Auctions’ US Coins Signature Auction. Presented on August 28, 2022, the sale offered some of the rarest coins in US numismatics, including a stunning Proof Eagle, a Panama-Pacific Round $50 and an 1857-S Double Eagle with exceptional eye appeal.

One of the impressive offerings in the sale was an 1866 Motto Eagle graded NGC PF 66 Cameo (lot 4099), which sold for $264,020. Beautifully struck, this example is one of 30 Proofs that were produced.

Also offered was a Panama-Pacific Round $50 Commemorative graded NGC MS 66 (lot 4175) that realized $198,000. This commemorative was distributed at San Francisco’s Panama-Pacific Expo, which celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal as well as the rebirth of that California city after a devastating earthquake. Fewer than 500 of the $50 round versions were sold, making them rarer than the octagonal versions that were sold concurrently.

The sale featured another coin with strong ties to San Francisco: an 1857-S Double Eagle that was recovered from the wreck of the SS Central America. Graded NGC MS 67★ (lot 4108), it also realized $198,000. Pedigreed to the Song Family Collection, this particular example is the highest-graded to have also earned the NGC Star (★) Designation for exceptional eye appeal, which is highly desired by collectors.
