Revolutionary War Rarity Leads Coins Certified by NGC in Stack's Sale

A Revolutionary War rarity that realized $240,000 led the coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) in a recent Stack’s Bowers sale. Several NGC-certified gold rarities also realized six figures in the Global Showcase Auction – Session 7 and Session 8, which concluded on August 25, 2022.

The top highlight of Session 8 was an incredibly rare (circa 1780) Regulated Dollar – Philip Syng Jr. ‘PS’ on a Bolivia 1751P 8 Reales graded NGC VF 25 (lot 7006). The obverse clearly depicts the mark of Philip Syng Jr., a renowned silversmith who was most famous for creating the inkstand used for the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution. The ‘PS’ countermark dates to the Revolutionary War, when Syng regulated foreign currency to adjust it to local standards. The lot, which also included an unadulterated Bolivia 1751P 8 Reales, realized $240,000 in auction.

The top NGC-certified coin in Session 7 was an 1840-D Liberty Head Quarter Eagle graded NGC MS 62 (lot 6024). The coin’s grade makes it the finest known for this particular issue by the Dahlonega Mint, which was established in Georgia amid a gold rush there in the 1830s. The coin realized $144,000.

Session 8 also featured two coveted 1915-S Panama-Pacific Commemorative pieces: a Round $50 graded NGC MS 65 (lot 7231) and an Octagonal $50 also graded NGC MS 65 (lot 7233). The Round $50 realized $138,000, while the Octagonal $50 realized $132,000.

Other NGC-certified highlights included:

• a Humbert 1851 “887” Reeded $50 piece graded NGC MS 61 (lot 7247) that realized $99,000
• a 1776 Pewter ‘CURENCY’ Continental Dollar graded NGC MS 62 (lot 7001) that realized $84,000
• an 1871-CC Liberty Head Double Eagle graded NGC AU 53 (lot 7194) that realized $66,000
• a 1920-S Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle graded NGC AU 58 (lot 7222) that realized $52,800
• a Wass-Molitor 1855 $50 graded NGC XF 45 (lot 7258) that realized $51,600
• a US Assay Office 1852 900T $50 graded NGC AU 55 (lot 7257) that realized $50,400
