Fifteen NGC-certified Coins Realize Six Figures in MDC Monaco Auction

Fifteen coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) realized over $100,000 each in a Monnaies de Collection Monaco sale held on June 3, 2022. Among the impressive selection of NGC-certified lots, a coin salvaged from the sunken 1715 Fleet stood out in the sale.

Recovered from the wreckage of the 1715 Spanish Fleet, a Mexico 1715MO J “Royal” 8 Escudos with large Rosettes on Reverse graded NGC MS 62 (lot 1110) realized €300,000 (about $321,500). Royal coinage like this example was struck on special planchets and intended for dignitaries. While sailing off the coast of Florida, the fleet was destroyed by a hurricane. Another gold coin featured in the sale is a favorite among collectors: an Una and the Lion. The Great Britain 1839 5 Sovereign graded NGC PF 62 Ultra Cameo (lot 927) is an example of what is considered the most beautiful design in British numismatics, celebrating the young Queen Victoria. It sold for €264,000 (about $282,900).

Also, a Romanian 1939 100 Lei with Large Coat of Arms graded NGC MS 64 (lot 1152) realized €240,000 (about $257,200). This coin features King Carol II, who was forced to abdicate a year after this coin was struck.

• a Vietnam (1848-83) Annam Gold Lang graded NGC MS 62 (lot 1265) that realized €168,000 (about $180,000)
• a Germany 1813C Westphalia 40 Franken graded NGC AU 55 (lot 230) that realized €156,000 (about $167,200)
• an Italy 1907 Prova Gold 100 Lire graded NGC PF 64 Matte (lot 1093) that realized €144,000 (about $154,300)
• an Austria (1626) Hall 7.5 Ducats graded NGC AU 55 (lot 264) that realized €120,000 (about $128,600)
• an Italy 1903 Gold 100 Lire graded NGC PF 63 Matte (lot 1089) that realized €108,000 (about $115,700)
• a Madagascar 1895 Gold Pattern 5 Francs graded NGC PF 62 Cameo and pedigreed to the Paramount Collection (lot 1105) that realized €102,000 (about $109,300)
• a France 1580-dated Francois D’Anjou Gold Medal graded NGC UNC Details (lot 438) that realized €102,000 (about $109,300)
• a France 1817 Gold Medal graded NGC PF 64+ Cameo and pedigreed to the Paramount Collection (lot 647) that realized €96,000 (about $102,800)
