Posted on 09/06/2022
Fifteen coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) realized over $100,000 each in a Monnaies de Collection Monaco sale held on June 3, 2022. Among the impressive selection of NGC-certified lots, a coin salvaged from the sunken 1715 Fleet stood out in the sale.
Recovered from the wreckage of the 1715 Spanish Fleet, a Mexico 1715MO J “Royal” 8 Escudos with large Rosettes on Reverse graded NGC MS 62 (lot 1110) realized €300,000 (about $321,500). Royal coinage like this example was struck on special planchets and intended for dignitaries. While sailing off the coast of Florida, the fleet was destroyed by a hurricane.
